Mendoza

The beautiful city of Mendoza is located in the region of Cuyo and is one of the most talked about cities in the country due to its elegant beauty, world class wine, and fantastic outdoors sport, including mountain climbing in the Andes, skiing in a famous ski resort, and adventure filled river rafting. Mendoza is only 1000km from Buenos Aires and makes for a great weekend away, a week long wine visit, or a complete outdoor adventure getaway.

Located in the desert, Mendoza’s climate is fairly moderate with summers that see plenty of sun and warm weather (18-33C) and winters that are cool and refreshing (3-16C). During the winter, the mountains surrounding the city are much cooler making skiing possible and the climate drops to below zero temperatures during the night and occasionally the day in the coldest months.

Mendoza has an incredible irrigation system that was built years ago that enables the city to keep water flowing to its many vineyards and hundreds of flowers, plants, and trees that are planted throughout the city, flourishing in the summer and spring months. The water for the irrigation system comes from both the Mendoza and Tunuyan rivers as well as in the spring season when the snow melts from the peaks of the Andes Mountains.

Besides the fabulous wine and great outdoor activities, a big part of Mendoza’s tourist attraction is the beautiful city itself. The city, home to 600,000 people, is a mix of traditional past influenced by both Italian and French immigrants, as well as a modern flair, due to the multitude of past reconstructions after earthquakes had hit the region. Today the city is clean, well-constructed, and accommodates thousands of visitors every year offering fantastic restaurants, cafes, bars, nightclubs, museums, shopping, plazas, and parks. Being in the middle of the wine region, the establishments in Mendoza all cater to wine drinkers and offer up a wide array of local wines to sip anytime of the day. Every year the city celebrates a National Wine Festival where wine, music, dancing, and even a beauty show celebrate everything there is about wine. When visitors are not enjoying the local wines, they can head to the few good museums located in the city, mostly offering up information regarding the city’s history. There is also the Parque General San Martin, a large park with a tranquil lake and some beautiful flower gardens and cozy benches to enjoy the view.

Wine in Mendoza
The wine route in Mendoza is a major reason thousands of outside visitors come to visit the countless wineries, vineyards, and wine tasting houses every year and discover the famous wines that are being produced, consumed, and exported from here. Tours of local wineries can be organized in the city, visited by car, foot, or on bicycle. Some of the most well known are Bodega Escorihuela, Bodega La Rural, and Luigi Bosca.

The great outdoors
Mendoza offers plenty of outdoors activities that can be enjoyed during the spring, summer, and fall months. A popular activity is to go with a horseback riding tour that takes riders through the Andes Mountains and shows them some spectacular view of the area. These mountains are also popular for mountain climbing, hiking, and walking down the designated paths or with a professional guide. The Mendoza and Tunuyan rivers are great places to enjoy river rafting, and are even where some of the best professionals in this sport go to practice.

Snow Skiing
Not far outside of Mendoza is the popular ski resort of Las Leñas, the highest ski mountain in the area. This big and beautiful ski resort attracts thousands of visitors every winter that come to enjoy the fantastic skiing conditions, various ski slopes for all levels, and amenities of a first rate ski resort.
